The Voice of the Unheard - October 2009

The Voice of the Unheard: An Experience of Hope
is a group of events featuring local youth and the Hope Stone Dance Company from Houston Texas. Christian Community Development Corporation (CCDC) – Our House will be the host for these events.

The purpose of the evening is to raise awareness of the difficulties homeless youth, ages 15-21, face in our Abilene community and to make youth and adults aware of Our House and the street outreach ministry. Hannah Capra, an award winning local teen photographer, has been working with at-risk youth to create a performance and visual art project using Photovoice methodology and the results of their hard work will be shared with the Abilene community on the evening of October 8, 2009.  By uniting the immediate impact of a photograph and the story that contextualizes and enhances it, these individuals find confidence in their voices and are enabled to speak out about their challenges, concerns, hopes and fears. Their photographic work will be highlighted at the Cockerell Studios “Upstairs” and shared in an audio-visual presentation at the Paramount Theatre (7:30PM) during the October 8th Artwalk. Rob Beckham, an award winning local teen composer, has contributed the music on the DVD.

The other major participant in the evening’s program will be Hope Stone Dance Company, a dance and theater ensemble made up of professional dancers & performers, founded in 1997, is an organization with equal emphasis on the presentation of authentic dance, music, theatre and continuing arts outreach to children, especially those at risk.  It is a not-for-profit arts organization whose goal is to present performance art in some of its varied ways, shapes and forms at hand … and feet…through the vibrant positive message of dance, music and theatre.  Original works choreographed by Artistic Director Jane Weiner are based on the premise that “life without art would in fact not be life.” This season the company is preparing for a year-long project entitled Village of Waltz, excerpts to premiere in Abilene.

On October 9th members of the Hope Stone Company will visit Abilene Independent School District campuses to present workshops and assemblies. That evening they will conclude their time in Abilene by offering a master class for local dancers. Ballet Abilene has offered studio space and will help promote the class among local dancers. Tickets are $5.00. For more information you can call Nancy Capra at 721-1552

Art For Money was the first collaborative effort between local artists and the Christian Community Development Corporation. The participating artists believe that struggle often leads to great creativity but without release it can cripple and crush the spirit. Often young people trying to make their own way encounter these kinds of struggles and we believe that the opportunity to come alongside and assist in a time of need can provide hope which can inspire dreams. All the proceeds from the sell of these art pieces went directly to assist young people, ages 16-21, as they transition into independent living.

Thank you to all who participated!
